Writing Custom Instructions

Custom Instructions let you set strict behavioral rules for the AI Double. These instructions apply to every conversation and override other settings.

How to add Custom Instructions

  1. Go to Behaviour (find it in the sidebar under Double AI Twin)
  2. Scroll to Custom Instructions
  3. Write instructions in the text field (up to 1,500 characters)
  4. Click Save Changes

Instructions apply immediately to all conversations.

What to know

  • Character limit: 1,500 characters
  • Applied to every prompt: Instructions are added to every conversation automatically
  • Strict enforcement: The AI follows these rules exactly
  • Works with everything: Combines with Personality, Knowledge Base, and other Behavior settings

What you can control

Information gatekeeping

  • "Ask for user's name before providing any information"
  • "Collect email addresses before sharing pricing details"

Driving actions

  • "Always push users to book a live demo when they show interest"
  • "Send calendar link immediately after expressing interest"

Handling specific topics

  • "For pricing questions, explain our plans in detail and provide the pricing link"
  • "Never discuss competitor products - redirect to our strengths"

Conversation style

  • "Be deeply empathetic and supportive"
  • "Focus on making the user feel heard and understood"

Best practices

  • Be specific and direct - the AI follows instructions literally
  • Test after adding - chat with the AI to see how it behaves
  • Start simple - add one rule at a time
  • Use clear language - avoid ambiguous instructions
  • Update regularly - refine based on actual conversations

Examples

For lead generation:
"Ask for the user's name and company before providing detailed information. Always push users to book a demo when they express interest."

For customer support:
"Be patient and empathetic. Ask clarifying questions before suggesting solutions. Never make promises about features - direct complex requests to our support team."

For sales:
"Qualify leads by asking about their business needs. For pricing questions, explain our plans and share the pricing page link. Always encourage booking a call."
